The following is a summary of the monographic work titled "Response Spectra Analysis in Managua City Area" (in Spanish), presented in 2001 by M. J. Picado and R. M. Parrales when graduated as Civil Engineers at the National Engineering University (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería), Managua, Nicaragua.

Managua city

Republic of Nicaragua Nicaragua is situated within the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a seismic and volcanic active zone. The interaction between the tectonic plates not only produces earthquakes but also has created a tectonic depression and an active volcanic chain.

Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, is one of the most seismically affected areas, since it is located over a local fault system inside the Depression. Earthquakes here can produce great damages, as indeed happened both in 1931 and in 1972.

Response spectra

Response Spectra It has been demonstrated that ground motions during earthquakes are influenced by the local soil conditions. Therefore, these conditions also influence the resulting damage.

The response spectrum is a convenient medium to evaluate the maximum lateral force developed in structures subject to a given movement at their basement.
