Are
there theoretical limitations on trans-communication-phenomena? -
Some predictions of the model of pragmatic information (MPI)
Walter von Lucadou
The
usual interpretation of the trans-communication-phenomenon is the
spiritualistic one. It assumes that information, which is received
by different techniques (ITC) emerges from beyond and that "discarnate
agencies" are sending messages. Sceptics maintain that ITC-phenomena
are merely illusions. In spite of the fact that the origin of the
messages may be unclear, a lot can be said about the "receiving
system" namely the human "observer".
Whatever the origin of the ITC-phenomenon may be, the "messages"
must fulfil certain requirement in order to yield any information.
The Model of Pragmatic Information (MPI) is a theoretical framework,
which describes the development of meaningful information from signals.
This process depends on the context, novelty and confirmation of the
message. In the framework of the MPI, meaning is a global variable
in the sense of "Weak Quantum Theory" (WQT). Thus the structure
of the MPI is "non-classical" and contains complementary
observables exhibiting non-local features. These features liberate
the ITC-phenomenon on one hand (to a certain extend) form the reign
of space and time; on the other hand they impose certain limitations
on the content of the messages, such that the phenomena remain elusive.
From this point of view the problems of ITC are less of technical
or psychological (as Batcheldor assumed) than of systemic origin.
Two fundamental cuts (the Cartesian and the Heisenbergian) of the
universe are described and the concept of "organizational closure"
is introduced. It is argued, that possession-type phenomena are no
trans-communication phenomena it spite of the fact that the former
often develop from the latter. Similarities with “poltergeist”-phenomena
are discussed.
From the basic assumptions of MPI two main statements can be formulated:
1. Trans-communication phenomena are non-local correlations in psychophysical,
self-organizing, organizationally closed systems, which are induced
by the pragmatic information, which creates the system.
2. Any attempt to use a non-local correlation as a signal transfer
makes the non-local correlation vanish or change or the effect changes
in an unpredictable way.
For ITC-phenomena the MPI predicts that "messages" can only
be obtained under conditions in which no control is exerted and that
they remain elusive. They cannot surmount a certain limit of testable
information. If ITC phenomena are too reliable or “too good”,
it is highly probable that they are due to misinterpretation, failure,
illusion, or even fraud (Timm’s rule)
